The most successful edition of the Grosvenor House fair in London took place in 2009. It was the event’s 75th anniversary year but soon after the owners of the hotel said the fair would not be staged the following year. It was quickly replaced by Masterpiece at a different venue.
Also in 2009, dealer association LAPADA launched a new fair in a marquee in Berkeley Square in London's Mayfair and the buying power of Chinese nationals became a major force at auctions around the world.

Irish Government decides to extend Resale Right derogation
19 January 2009The Irish Government have decided to go the same way as the UK in not applying the Artist’s Resale Right (ARR) to the heirs of dead artists until 2012. The extension means that ARR will continue to apply to works by living artists only.
Elephant lobby target Portobello Road
19 January 2009A CHALK drawing of an ‘elephant graveyard’ appeared earlier this month at the entrance to the Portobello Road Market. The three-dimensional pavement art depicting an elephant carcass was the work of representatives for the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), who in recent years have singled out the weekly antiques market in its campaign to curb the illegal trade in modern elephant ivory.
