Detroit – Du Mouchelles
This classic marine painting by Montague Dawson (1890-1973), a British artist who specialised in this genre, will feature in Du Mouchelles’ three-day sale to be held in Detroit, Michigan, on December 14-16.
The 2 x 3ft (61 x 91cm) signed oil on canvas depicts the Loch Etive, a clipper which was built in Glasgow as part of the Loch Line. It comes with further biographical information about the artist, and information on the ship, on a certificate applied to the reverse from the Michigan art dealer Daniel Rees.
Estimate $40,000-60,000.
Chicago – Leslie Hindman
This three-piece French garniture in Sèvres-style porcelain with silver mounts by the Paris firm Tetard Frères, 19th century, will feature in a sale of furniture, decorative arts and silver at Leslie Hindman in Chicago on January 23-24.
The tallest element in the garniture measures 16½in (42cm) in height and the estimate is $8000-12,000.
New York - Bonhams
This Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) pencil and watercolour on paper is estimated at $20,000-30,000 in Bonhams’ Modern Decorative Art & Design auction in New York on December 14.
The 10 x 7½in (25 x 19cm) work is signed, dated and inscribed BLACKTHORN/CHIDDINGSTONE/1910/KENT/CRM MMM.
It has a provenance including The Fine Art Society, London and last appeared at auction in Christie’s, King Street, London, on November 6, 2002.
The picture was exhibited in spring 1996 at The Fine Art Society, London; and in Mackintosh and the Glasgow Style, a travelling exhibition in Japan, September 2000-February 2001.
Chicago – Potter & Potter
An online-only auction devoted to the subject of magic will be held by Potter & Potter on December 15. The saleroom specialises in this field.
Among the 200 lots of books, posters, ephemera and magic apparatus will be this disembodied tapping hand made by Hornmann of New York c.1918.
It is enclosed in a velvet and lace cuff and taps out the answers to questions posed by the audience, giving one tap for yes and two for no. Estimate $200-300.
California – Theriault’s
The first day of Theriault’s weekend Marquis: Antique Doll Auction, to be held at the Fashion Island Hotel in Newport Beach, California, on January 12-13, is given over to the Margaret Lumia collection of antique dolls.
It ranges from early wood and papier mâché dolls to French bébés and poupées, and the rarest of the German bisque art characters, mostly in original costumes. There are also dolls’ houses and early dolls’ furniture.
Pictured here is one of the highlights: a rare bébé by Emile Jumeau of c.1888, depicting an Asian child and wearing the original silk costume, guided at $20,000-30,000.
New York – Swann Galleries
A group of four watercolours by Edward Lear features in a sale at Swann Galleries in New York on December 13.
They date from his tour of Italy in 1847, vary in size from 6½ x 9¾in to 7 x 10¾in (16.5 x 25cm to 18 x 27cm) and are executed in ink, graphite and watercolour with touches of bodycolour.
Three of them, one shown here, all dated 21 Sept, depict the Castello de Melfi, a medieval castle located on the coast halfway between Naples and Bari. The fourth shows the Castello di Lagopesole, situated around 30km south-east of Melfi, and is dated 30 Sept. Each work is estimated at $3000-5000.
Boston – Skinner
Skinner is holding a sale of European furniture and decorative arts in its Boston Rooms on January 12.
It will include this 12in (30cm) high bronze figure of a pointer guarding game by a tree stump by the French animalier sculptor Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-79).
Estimate $1500-3000.
Connecticut – Nest Egg Auctions
This Rolex man’s Cosmograph Daytona Paul Newman wristwatch, serial no 1090455, has been consigned to Nest Egg Auctions’ December 29 sale in Berlin, Connecticut, by the original owner who purchased it in the 1960s.
It has the original box and brochure and comes with some extra parts.
Estimate $20,000-30,000.
California – IM Chait
This late 19th-early 20th century covered silver cup made by Neresheimer of Hanau in 17th-century style features in a sale at IM Chait in Beverly Hills, California, on December 16.
Standing 2ft 1¾in (65cm) high, weighing around 73oz and decorated with chased mythological scenes and a finial modelled as Diana with a hound, it bears hallmarks that include Neresheimer and pseudo-Augsburg marks to the cover and base. With a provenance to the collection of Eugene Iglesias, it has an estimate of $2000-3000.
