Unlike the circulated note (in shades of green), the front of the proof is shown in brown, the back in red. Graded as ‘63 choice uncirculated’, it sold for £10,400 (estimate £5000-6000) at St James’s Auctions on October 5.

The Trinidad & Tobago $1000 note, c.1914, is itself a rare beast but this example is a colour proof printed on two sheets by Thomas De La Rue.
