The collection of 142 works will be split between a live auction at the Newbury saleroom (127 lots offered on June 27) and 15 items with estimates of more than £10,000 each that will be sold in King Street in the autumn. Christie’s will hold a highlights exhibition of 30 works in London from May 29 to June 4.
Dreweatts’ new managing director, Vicki Wonfor said working openly together with Christie’s on the consignment offered the vendors the opportunity to sell a broad-ranging collection as a single entity in an era when minimum lot values otherwise dictate only a small percentage would make it to King Street.
“This collaboration provides the owners of Goldfein collection a uniquely multifaceted route to market, drawing on the breadth of expertise and reach at both firms”, Wonfor added.
Stanley F Goldfein, a member of The Wedgwood Society of New York, collected 18th century British ceramics, both pottery and porcelain, with a particular fondness for Wedgwood.
The sale includes four examples of Wedgwood’s copy of the Portland or Barberini vase (one dated c.1790 has an estimate of £4000-6000) and a plate from the famous Wedgwood & Bentley Frog Service made for Catherine the Great, c.1773-74 (estimate £8000- 12,000).
