Hansons takes over Norfolk saleroom

It will be the seventh saleroom to be operated by the firm following its expansion from Derbyshire to Staffordshire, London, Kent, Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire.

This new incarnation of The Rostrum will be headed by Mike Winspear and led by Amanda Butler, with the first auction scheduled for July 20.

Owner of Hansons, Charles Hanson, said: “The opportunity to invest in The Old Bakery saleroom is one I couldn’t miss. The business has energy and we will invigorate it further thanks to 20 years of experience in the industry.

“From north Norfolk, south to Southwold, east to Beccles and west to King’s Lynn, this new expansion will serve thousands of clients and further enhance Hansons’ UK operations.”

As well as in-house consignment and valuations, The Rostrum team will host valuation events throughout the area including weekly events in Norwich. The Rostrum auction house started in 2021.

As Christianity spread across the Mediterranean in the years before the Council of Nicaea in 325, papyrus scrolls were slowly being replaced by the codex or book form.

Discovered buried in a jar in the sand in Egypt in 1952, it was acquired at Sotheby’s in 1988 by the Norwegian manuscript collector Martin Schoyen for a family collection that now comprises 20,000 manuscripts.
