So, can I do a big shout-out to Duke’s Auctions? It doesn’t run a packing service, but the friendly operator informed me it supports Royal Mail’s parcel collection service, where the postman will go to them, collect an item on my behalf, and then post it to me.

A simple online form was all it took (where I paid Royal Mail upfront), and two days after I won my lot, my book was in my hands.

Not only is this a significant improvement on the time it takes to receive goods, it means the book I won for £35 only cost £4.19.

When postage starts to cost as much as the item you’re buying, bidders will quickly think twice about raising their online paddle.

Please, can other auction houses advise their customers about this service.
